Pet Smile Month

Give your pet something to

smile about!

September sees Pet Smile Month taking place throughout the country with animal owners being encouraged to think about their pets’ dental hygiene and improve the care that they receive.

With statistics indicating that over 80% of cats and dogs have some form of dental disease, Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery is providing free dental checks and giving away Pet Smile Month goody bags throughout September. The Downslink Surgery in Southwater are also offering fixed price dental work including a scale polish and extractions as necessary for a fixed price of £99.99 for cats and £119.99 for dogs

Julian Peters, owner of Arthur lodge commented:

“Like all of us good dental hygiene can have an overall effect on our animal’s health. If your dog or cat’s gums are infected it will allow bacteria to enter their bloodstream which in turn can cause complications with all their vital organs.”

As well as providing free dental checks, Arthur Lodge is offering the below advice to ensure that owners can start a dental hygiene routine for their pet.

o Although having a pet’s teeth cleaned by a vet regularly is recommended, it can be quite expensive. Owners can clean the teeth themselves as several brands of animal toothpaste are available in various flavours. Arthur Lodge recommend that you let your animal lick the toothpaste first to ensure they become familiar with the taste. Always use paste that is specifically made for pets as human toothpaste can cause further medical problems.

o Hard rubber or nylon chew toys are not only a great way to play with the pet, but whilst being chewed the material will work to reduce plaque build up, massage the gums and help to strengthen the teeth and jaw.

o Vary the pet food that is given between dry and wet as the jelly in wet food contains sugar and the grinding action of dry food and biscuits can have the effect of helping to keep plaque at bay.
