Keeping pets cool under the collar
When the sun comes out we put on our shorts, sunglasses and flip flops and protect ourselves with sun cream, but what about our pets; did you know that they need protecting from the hot summer conditions as well?
With the summer weather upon us, Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery is urging pet owners to protect their animals this summer.
Arthur Lodge owner, Julian Peters commented:
“Animals can suffer in heat as much as humans. The signs to look out for include restlessness, heavy panting, excessive thirst, lethargy and rapid heartbeat. If your pet starts to show any of these signs you should contact your vet and lower their temperature gradually by wrapping them in a towel soaked in cold water.”
One of the most common problems is dogs that are left in cars, whilst their owners are out shopping, visiting friends.
“In sunny weather, temperatures inside a car can reach 100°F or higher,” commented Julian. “Dogs can die from heatstroke within 20 minutes, so should never be left in cars during the summer, not even with the windows slightly open.”
Certain animals are also capable of being sunburnt, in particular breeds with thin or light fur and exposed noses. For this reason, any owner planning on taking their dog out for long walks or leaving animals in the garden should invest in some sunscreen for the animal’s nose. Cats with white ears and noses are also particularly susceptible to sun burn which may lead to more serious problems.
“Sunburn can easily be prevented,” commented Julian. “The easiest way is to not let animals outside during the hottest part of the day. It’s particularly tough for dogs as they cool themselves off by panting and sweating through their pads, so take dogs for walks during the early morning or evening when pavements won’t be so hot.”
The most vital thing you can do for your animal during the summer months is to make sure that there is always a supply of fresh water that is kept in a shady area.
