Hair of the Dog!

With world famous dog show Crufts kicking off on Thursday 11th March Horsham veterinary surgery, Arthur Lodge is challenging dog owners to spruce up their pets to ensure that Horsham has the best looking hounds in the county.

Arthur Lodge owner Julian Peters commented:

“Whatever breed of dog you have, there are things that you can do to make them look their best, after all a dog is just like us, they always feel better when they look good! Dog grooming is a major part of an animals care and health regime and I hope that my advice will ensure that all man’s best friends are kept looking spick and span.”

There are a number of different dog brushes on the market so when purchasing one, owners should select a brush that is specifically designed for your dog’s hair type. Brushes with bristles that are farther apart are best for dogs with long and thicker hair, whereas it is better to use brushes with shorter and harder bristles for shorthaired dogs.

A trip to the hairdressers is not an easy option for a dog, so if an owner feels confident enough, a trim can be done at home. For long haired breeds, the hair should be cut on a regular basis to prevent it from becoming matted and tangled. Regular trims will also stop the onslaught of fleas, ticks and even lice.

If an owner is going to cut their dog’s hair, make sure it is done in a quiet place so that the dog does not get scared easily.

To help give Rover a glossy coat that is seen on dogs at Crufts, regular bathing is imperative. Bath time is maybe not a dogs’ favourite activity, so it is a good idea to have someone on hand to gently comfort them during bath time, and also help to keep the dog from jumping out! After a bath, keep the dog indoors until the fur is completely dry to stop them from getting a chill.

If you would like further information, the Arthur Lodge team are always on hand to offer advice. They can be contacted on 01403 252964 or alternatively pop into the surgery based on Arthur Road, Horsham for a chat.
