Night Pet Hates!

The busy bonfire and firework period is quite often a time that can cause anxiety and stress to your pets. Alarmingly, last year over 700 animals were harmed by fireworks with many more going missing after being scared by the loud noises.
Julian Peters, owner of Arthur Lodge has some simple advice to keep your pet safe and happy:
“Many owners are not aware that the majority of animals are petrified by loud noises. But there are some simple things that owners can do to alleviate any stress.”
Julian continued: “The main piece of advice that I can give is to ensure that noise is kept to a minimum by closing all doors and windows, and shutting the curtains. It’s a good idea to put the radio or television on to drown out the noise.”
Julian’s other essential points to guarantee that every member of the family can enjoy the bonfire period are:
o Remember that fireworks are not only let off on bonfire night, but also a few weeks before and also after in the run up to Christmas and new year.
o Ensure that any animals that are kept outside are either brought into the house, or put inside a garden shed, as pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds are easily frightened.
o Don’t worry if an animal hides, as by forcing them out could cause them additional stress.
o Ensure that the animal has a tag with your contact details on it in case it does try to run away.
o It is a good idea to make sure that pets have more exercise than normal to help them fall asleep during the evening.
o Never take a pet to a firework display.
As an alternative, Julian recommends pheromone products for cats and dogs to help reduce fears and create a calm and relaxing state:
“DAP for dogs and Feliway for cats are available as plug-in diffusers and should be introduced to the home a week before firework night to allow the pheromone to build up to significant levels.”
