Be eggstra careful with chocolate this Easter
Arthur Lodge is urging dog owners to keep their chocolaty treats hidden away from their pet pooches this Easter.
Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is harmless to humans but affects the central nervous systems in dogs causing convulsions, vomiting and diarrhoea and can be fatal if eaten in sufficient quantity.
Recent statistics from the Veterinary Poisons Information Service have indicated that vets have seen an increase of nearly 50% of dogs needing treatment after eating chocolate in the last two years.
Julian Peters, owner of Arthur Lodge commented:
“There is always so much chocolate around at Easter that I just want dog owners to be alert because children may not realise that it can be extremely harmful to their pet. They often end up feeding it to them so that they don’t feel left out. I would encourage owners to buy some doggie chocolate drops, or some pet shops even sell canine friendly Easter eggs. If there is an accident, the best piece of advice is to take your dog to see your vet straight away.”
