Remember pets beyond Christmas

Last December, the RSPCA received nearly three calls an hour about abandoned animals (1) with a noticeable increase in calls when compared to the previous year and RSPCA Sussex North suggest that this a local problem as well. This Christmas, Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery is asking people to consider the financial and practical costs of owning a pet before purchasing an animal.

Julian Peters, owner of Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery in Horsham, commented: “Buying a pet as a Christmas gift can seem like a magical idea. However, the magic can sometimes disappear as the cost of owning a pet begins to mount, especially within these trying financial times. An animal can be a lovely gift but it is certainly not a gift that can just be thrown away. Therefore, I would really urge people thinking of purchasing a pet as a present to seriously consider the fact that they will be responsible for this animal for many years to come.”

Susan North, of RSPCA Sussex North, commented: “December and January are extremely busy months for us and we witness a 30% increase in calls through January. It would seem that many people do change their minds quite soon after deciding on a pet as a Christmas present and it’s such a shame to see so many animals coming into us in the following months, looking for a new home.”

Those considering purchasing a pet are welcome to contact staff at Arthur Lodge to discuss the responsibilities and enquire about potential costs.
