Be aware of pet diabetes

Following a substantial increase in the number of animals affected by diabetes, a local veterinary surgery is urging pet owners to spot symptoms as early as possible and be more active in getting their pets checked.

As November marks Pet Diabetes Month, Hazel Holder, Diabetic Nurse at Arthur Lodge Veterinary Group, commented: “Some pet owners aren’t aware that animals can suffer with diabetes. However, the problem is rising, especially in older pets. A simple urine test can produce a diagnosis so it really is worth getting your animal checked regularly and keeping an eye out for any changes in your pet’s behaviour.”

Diabetes is more common in overweight animals and, with obesity in pets steadily on the increase, diabetes is becoming a growing problem. Symptoms for both dogs and cats include:

  • Drinking more water than usual
  • Urinating more than usual and having ‘accidents’ around the home
  • Increased appetite but no extra weight gained
  • Cloudy eyes

In addition, cat owners may notice that their pet sleeps more and has thinning hair.
